Fashion Week autumn 2010: Balmain

In a season where almost every designer has put out clothes that are traditional as well as subdued, it’s almost a relief to understand that Christophe Decarnin is still making clothes for rock stars as well as supermodels at Balmain. I mean, somebody has to, right?

Decarnin’s collection would look aggressively glam in almost any type of context, however the impact is only magnified a thousandfold when juxtaposed with the mournful browns as well as midcentury shapes of many of the season’s other prominent collection. Where others were doing ostrich leather purses as well as tailored suiting, Balmain brought us rich brocade, gold foiling, leather pants as well as ostentatious furs.

Several recent Balmain signatures, like bold-shouldered, glimmering minidresses, heavily detailed armed forces jackets, as well as skintight leather made their requisite appearances, however I was most struck by the somewhat out-of-territory elements of the collection. In particular, the gilded brocade jackets paired with skinny pants reminded me once again as well as once again of Keith Richards, as well as a number of deep-v belted evening gowns made me question who would be so lucky as to wear them on the red carpet. A fitting collection for a culture that has replaced nobility with music as well as film stars.
